Global Witness-Population Index
The Global Witness-Population Index is the population-keyed inverse of the cell-keyed populations database documented in the Dragon-Witness Populations doctrine. For each named population that contributes to one or more territorial-grid cell classifications, the index lists the cells where it appears, the role it carries at each, and the period of attested engagement.
The index totals 374 distinct named populations across the 130 cells of the territorial grid, with 12 populations spanning two or more cells. Role distribution across all population entries: witness 50, civilizational 162, shaman/oracle 153, custodian 13, early-hominin 11, absent 5.

The first version of the witness-population index, built from the hand-curated cell-keyed database in src/mapbook/populations.py, identifies 374 distinct named populations carrying dragon-corpus association across the 130-cell territorial grid. The total is conservative — it counts each population once even when it spans multiple cells. The same database also records 8 cells with no indigenous population at all (Galápagos pre-1535, Mascarene pre-1500, Antarctica, Jan Mayen/Svalbard, Azores pre-1432, and a small handful of others where the absent-population status is documented explicitly rather than left blank).
c0002 — Role distribution skews toward civilizational and shaman/oracle
Of the 394 population entries across all cells, the role distribution is: civilizational 162, shaman/oracle 153, witness 50, custodian 13, early-hominin 11, absent 5. Civilizational and shaman/oracle categories dominate the distribution, reflecting a corpus strongest where institutional textual records and specialist interpretive lineages both persist. Witness entries remain substantial but are not the second-largest category in the current dataset.
c0003 — 12 populations span two or more cells, indicating cross-corridor cultural continuity
A small number of populations appear in more than one cell of the grid, which is operationally significant because these are the populations whose cultural reach extends beyond a single 600 km territorial unit. The cross-cell populations include the Evenki of eastern Siberia (rus-05, rus-08, rus-12 — Tunguska through Lena to Stanovoy), the Buyi of southern China (chn-02, chn-03, chn-05 — Hongshuihe, Maolan, Anshun), Phoenician colonial settlement (afr-01, eur-29, eur-30 — Atlas, Sardinia, Sicily), the Saka/Scythian steppe nomads (eur-09, asi-06 — Central Asian suture, Kazakh steppe), and the pre-Han Buyi-Miao migration corpus across the southern Guizhou cluster. These cross-cell populations are the operational vectors by which dragon-corpus material may have transmitted between adjacent pods on the same chrysotile corridor.
c0004 — The Tujia, the DeLong lineage, and the Korean mudang are the archive's three exemplary cases
Three named populations carry exemplary status because they each demonstrate the deepest documented continuous engagement with a specific cell. The Tujia at chn-01 (Shizhu-Wuling) maintain over 1,500 years of attested shrine practice at the same earth-pimple sites the MSS now monitors. The DeLong custodial lineage at eur-01 (Mont Donon) held the Vosges site through fourteen centuries of institutional cover shifts before its early-18th-century dispersion. The Korean mudang shamanic lineage at asi-01 maintains continuous practice from the Three Kingdoms period through the present. These three are the calibrated cases against which all other witness-population claims are weighted in the cultural-record indicator class of the External Indicator Correlation framework.
c0005 — Eight cells carry the explicit absent-population marker
The cells with no indigenous human population are recorded explicitly in the database rather than left as null entries. They are: ant-01 (Antarctica, no indigenous population at all); pac-17 (Galápagos, uninhabited prior to 1535 CE); afr-17 (Mascarene, uninhabited prior to 16th-century European contact, with later Tamil-Hindu syncretic overlay); eur-20 (Jan Mayen and Svalbard, uninhabited prior to 17th century); eur-24 (Azores, uninhabited prior to 1432); and three additional cells where the population entry is the explicit absence marker. These cells are not coverage gaps — the absence itself is structural data: a cell with no indigenous population has no cultural-class indicator channel to recover, and external-indicator scoring at the cell relies entirely on the geological and geophysical channels.
c0006 — The index is the operational view for ethnographic fieldwork prioritisation
The cell-keyed populations database (in src/mapbook/populations.py and visible in each cell map's caption panel) is the survey-planner's view: given a specific cell, who carries the cultural record there. The aggregate population-keyed index documented here is the analyst's view: given a specific population, where in the grid does its dragon-corpus signal contribute to cell classification. The two views are complementary and together implement the Dragon-Witness Populations doctrine. Cultural Documentation Programme analysts use the aggregate index to prioritise ethnographic recovery work: populations spanning multiple cells justify shared methodology investment; populations near extinction (Selk'nam, Cochimí, Yaghan, Sámi in declining areas, Tasmanian palawa kani) justify urgent recovery before the cultural channel closes entirely.
