The Khmer royal-lineage founding-myth, documented in Chinese sources from ~3rd c. CE (referring to Funan) and in later Angkorian inscriptions, describes the marriage of the Brahmin Kauṇḍinya (Hundian in Chinese transliteration, Preah Thong in later Khmer rendering) to Soma (Liu-ye in Chinese, Neang Neak in later Khmer — "Lady Nāga"), daughter of the Nāga-king. The narrative positions Khmer kingship as nāga-descended and the land itself as gift from the father-in-law Nāga-king who drank the waters to reveal the land. Zhou Daguan's 1296-1297 report mentions that the Khmer king was believed to spend each night with the Nāga-princess in the Phnom Bakheng tower. This is the archive's clearest case of a dragon-ancestry royal-ideology with continuous inscriptional and ritual support from pre-Angkorian period through the Angkor era and into early-modern post-Angkorian court.
