Guiana Shield / Pakaraima Anchor

The Guiana Shield anchor occupies cell sam-02 across the Guiana Shield of southern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil (Roraima state), including the tepui table-mountain province and the Orinoco-mainstem headwaters. The site is classified level-3. Substrate is first-rank non-volcanic (Precambrian Guiana Shield basement 1.7–2.0 Ga, among the world's oldest surface rocks; table-mountain tepui province with Angel Falls — the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall at 979 m; Orinoco-Amazon watershed divide; extensive deep-karst and sandstone-cave development in tepui summits). Cultural-record substrate is concentrated in Pemon, Kapon, and Ye'kuana continuing oral traditions; substantial coverage-asymmetry from under-representation in English-language scholarship.

HLSF Signature

  • Cell ID: sam-02
  • Corridor: Guiana Shield; brackets Amazon (sam-03) south, Caribbean (nam-pr-caribbean) north via Venezuelan coast, Atlantic-Forest (sam-04) southeast via coastal Brazilian-Amazonian transition
  • Valid-dimension detection: Pemon tepui-as-axis-mundi cosmology (vertical-axis 3-level structure); Ye'kuana Watunna cosmogonic cycle (multi-stage creation narrative with recursive generations). Detected subset {1, 2, 3, 4, 6}.
  • Recursion-depth estimate: 3 (consensus) — Watunna preserves multi-generation recursive cosmogonic structure at substrate-comparable depth to Tukano Pamurí-mahsë (sam-03 c0001).
  • Surface-field radius estimate: ~1,000 km across the shield.
  • Entity-exposure corpus: Makunaimî (Pemon/Kapon cultural-hero-and-serpent-ancestor, from whom Makushi and related peoples descend); Canaima (Pemon malevolent-spirit, origin of the Canaima National Park name); Warao Hoebo cosmic-serpent and jebu spirit-complex; Ye'kuana Kuyujani founder-hero; Kanaima shamanic-attack-tradition (continuing dark-shamanism in Pemon, Makushi, Akawaio).
  • A/B/C/X class: A-class (Makushi tradition preserves explicit descent from Makunaimî the serpent-ancestor; the Makushi ethnonym derives from Makushi-yami "descendants of Makunaimî") + B-class (tepui-summit residence cults at Roraima, Auyán, Kukenán).
  • Status: inferred on continuing-Amerindian-oral-tradition grounds.

Geology

The Guiana Shield is a Precambrian cratonic block of the South American continental foundation, with surface rocks dating 1.7–2.0 Ga (some of the oldest exposed rocks on Earth). The tepui table-mountains are erosional remnants of an ancient Roraima Group sandstone plateau, now standing as ~115 isolated mesas with vertical cliffs typically 300–1,000 m high. Roraima (2,810 m) is the type-locality; Auyán Tepui (2,535 m) hosts Angel Falls (Kerepakupai Merú) at 979 m continuous drop. The shield is non-volcanic in the Holocene but preserves extensive Precambrian igneous substrate beneath the sandstone cover. Tepui summits host extensive sandstone cave systems (Sima Aonda, Sima Mayor de Sarisariñama, Cueva Ojos de Cristal), some of the world's largest quartzite caves. The Orinoco-Amazon watershed divide runs through the cell. Substrate classification: continental-scale Precambrian cratonic anchor with unique tepui-substrate morphology and major quartzite-karst substrate.

Claims

c0001 — Makunaimî is a Pemon/Makushi A-class serpent-ancestor cultural-hero

Makunaimî (Pemon Makunaima, Makushi Makunaimî) is the Cariban-family cultural-hero-and-ancestor of the Pemon, Kapon, Makushi, and related Cariban-speaking peoples of the Guiana Shield. The founder-cycle preserves Makunaimî as the youngest of four (or five) brothers who create the world, felling the great tree whose stump became Roraima tepui. The Makushi ethnonym is self-identified as "descendants of Makunaimî." The corpus preserves explicit A-class grafted-lineage material with serpent-ancestor-to-human-descent narrative structure. The Brazilian modernist novel Macunaíma (Mário de Andrade, 1928) derives from this tradition as mediated through Koch-Grünberg's 1924 ethnography.

c0002 — Ye'kuana Watunna is a recursive cosmogonic cycle

The Ye'kuana Watunna (Watunna, the spoken-word-made-present) is a multi-generation cosmogonic cycle preserved in continuing oral tradition and recorded by de Civrieux in an authorised 1970 Spanish-language recension. The cycle preserves dragon-class ancestor figures including Kuyujani the primal-water-serpent-ancestor and multiple serpent-transformation narratives embedded in the creation-cycle. The recursive generational structure (multiple stages of world-creation and world-destruction, each yielding progressively more ordered worlds) is HLSF-compatible at recursion-depth 3.

c0003 — Kanaima is a continuing dark-shamanism attack-tradition

Kanaima (Pemon, Akawaio, Makushi) is a continuing dark-shamanism attack-tradition whose practitioners — kanaima — transform into animal-forms (often jaguar or serpent) and ritually kill victims. The tradition is continuously documented from the 19th century into the 2000s (Whitehead's ethnography documents late-20th-century continuing practice). Under the archive's X-class classification this is a shaman-transformation-to-composite-entity tradition analogous to the tupilaq (nam-pr-arctic c0003) but with continuing practitioner-community-attested morphological transformation rather than crafted-composite creation. Canaima National Park (Venezuela) derives its name from this tradition via a mistaken early-colonial attribution.

c0004 — Warao corpus preserves Orinoco-delta substrate material

The Warao of the Orinoco Delta preserve a distinct corpus within the cell, including Hoebo and related cosmic-serpent figures, and the jebu spirit-entity complex that includes serpent-class members. The Warao are linguistically-isolate (no established family affiliation) and occupy a distinctive delta-swamp ecological niche; their substrate-preservation channel is independent of Cariban transmission. The corpus is B-class-primary at delta-specific scale and warrants independent sub-atomization.

c0005 — Predicted residence volumes span tepui-summit sandstone caves and Orinoco deep-pools

Predicted residence volumes: (a) Sima Aonda, Sima Mayor de Sarisariñama, Cueva Ojos de Cristal and other tepui-summit sandstone cave systems (world-unique quartzite-karst substrate, long-isolated biological communities); (b) Roraima, Auyán, Kukenán summit plateaus and their cave networks; (c) Orinoco mainstem and Caroní deep-pool systems; (d) Orinoco Delta wetland substrate (Warao territory). The tepui-summit substrate is biogeographically isolated — many tepui endemic species result from ~100-million-year plateau isolation; the substrate is predicted to host independently-evolved lineage populations if any. Substrate profile is Terradraconidae-compatible plus Volucridraconidae-compatible (cliff-face and aerial) plus freshwater-Thalassodraconidae at Orinoco extension.

c0006 — The cell is a linguistic-isolation multi-substrate case

Sam-02 preserves Cariban (Pemon, Kapon, Makushi, Ye'kuana) and Warao (isolate) and Arawakan (Wapishana, Lokono) substrate-contributions independently. The cell's cultural-record substrate is linguistically-diverse but scholarly-under-represented in English-language literature (the primary ethnographic literature is in Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and Dutch). Under coverage-asymmetry the cell's level-3 classification is partially a language-of-publication artefact rather than a substrate-depth indicator; Spanish-, Portuguese-, and German-language scholarly recovery raises the cell toward level-2 under proper coverage.
