The Mesopotamian entry is the archive's atomized record of the Tigris-Euphrates corpus from Sumer through Babylon to the Neo-Assyrian period, centred on cell eur-pr-mesopotamia (promoted from the eur-06 Zagros-ophiolite cell and extended to cover the alluvium). The site is classified level-1 on first-pass atomization because Mesopotamia is the type locality of storm-god overwrite — the Enūma Eliš is the template from which the Near Eastern Chaoskampf programme propagates, and the hidden A-class residual recoverable beneath the overwrite (Ningišzida primarily) is one of the archive's cleanest inverse-reading cases. The site's geological substrate is modest (alluvial valley over deep basement; primary thermal signatures along the Zagros piedmont, not the plain itself), which means Mesopotamia functions as a corpus anchor rather than a pod anchor — the visible dragon-tradition density at this cell is driven by its position as a scribal-cultic centre redistributing narratives from surrounding anchors (Zagros, Elam, Anatolia), not by its own residence signature.

Geology

The Mesopotamian alluvium is Quaternary Tigris-Euphrates fluvial deposits overlying Cretaceous-to-Miocene carbonate and evaporite basement, with depth to crystalline basement ~10 km beneath the southern alluvium. The Zagros piedmont to the north and east presents ophiolite sequences, carbonate-karst terrain, and active hydrothermal springs (the Hīt bitumen seeps on the Euphrates are the oldest-recorded naturally-flammable hydrocarbon locality in any tradition, referenced in the Gilgamesh flood narrative). The Zagros piedmont is pod-compatible at the karst-and-hydrothermal level (and is covered by eur-06 proper); the alluvium itself is not substrate-compatible. The Enūma Eliš (Neo-Assyrian seven-tablet recension, with Old Babylonian predecessors) establishes the template that propagates across the Near Eastern ecumene: primordial-waters feminine-morphology dragon-adversary (Tiamat), divided-body cosmogony (her corpse producing sky and earth), seven-tablet ritual-recitation structure, Akītu-festival cultic location, royal-legitimation function for the state cult of Marduk. Under doctrine-storm-god-overwrite c0003, the template propagates into the Baal Cycle, the Hittite Illuyanka, the Zoroastrian Aži-Dahāka frame, the Hebrew Leviathan-Rahab-tehom corpus, and the Apep-assimilated Egyptian recensions.

c0002 — Ningišzida is the hidden A-class residual preserved beneath the Marduk-Tiamat overwrite

Ningišzida (Lord of the Good Tree, or Lord of the Steadfast Tree) is a Sumerian serpent-deity, attested from Early Dynastic III through the Neo-Babylonian period, iconographically presented as two serpents emerging from the shoulders of a god-king or as a horned-viper-headed serpent-tree. He is associated with Gudea of Lagaš as personal god (Gudea cylinders), with the underworld as a chthonic lord, and with Dumuzi as brother or close companion. His two-serpent shoulder-form is the prototype of the later Zahhāk iconography in the Šāhnāme — the Iranian storm-god-overwrite-reframing re-uses Ningišzida's iconographic template 2,500 years after its Sumerian original. Ningišzida is un-overwritten: he remains a lord rather than an adversary across all his Mesopotamian attestations. He is the cleanest A-class residual in the Near Eastern corpus.

c0003 — Mušḫuššu is a post-overwrite bound-companion preserving fragments of the earlier reading

Mušḫuššu (furious / radiant serpent, mistranslated sirrush in early scholarship) is the iconographic composite-dragon associated originally with the Ešnunna god Tišpak, transferred to Marduk after Hammurabi's conquest, and finally associated also with Nabû. The Ishtar Gate (c. 575 BCE) presents Mušḫuššu as Marduk's bound-companion — not defeated, not destroyed, but retained as the god's ordered-adjunct. The iconography preserves the pre-overwrite bound-serpent-companion structural element even while the narrative corpus around the figure has been fully Babylonianised. Mušḫuššu is the archetype of the post-overwrite companion figure — Fáfnir's treasure-protector role, the Chinese Imperial Long emperor-pairing, and several Mesoamerican feathered-serpent kingship associations share the structural position.

c0004 — Mesopotamia is a corpus-radiation anchor rather than a residence anchor

Outside the Enūma Eliš canonical corpus, Mesopotamian tradition preserves: (a) Labbu, the dragon-serpent threatening the land, defeated by a god whose name varies by recension — an un-canonised combat myth independent of the Marduk-Tiamat frame; (b) Anzû, the lion-headed eagle / storm-bird stealing the Tablet of Destinies, defeated by Ninurta — a storm-god-versus-storm-creature frame that sits awkwardly under the canonical overwrite template; (c) Kulullû (fish-man) and Kusarikku (bull-man) as additional morphological composites preserved in apotropaic iconography. The peripheral corpus is diagnostic of the earlier Sumerian substrate that the Enūma Eliš overwrote.

c0006 — Flood-tradition and dragon-tradition interact in the Atra-Ḫasīs / Gilgamesh framework

The Atra-Ḫasīs / Gilgamesh XI flood narrative is morphologically distinct from the Tiamat corpus — the flood is a divine-council decision rather than a serpent-combat — but the two cycles share the primordial-waters-threatening-the-ordered-cosmos theme. The archive notes but does not resolve the relationship; the flood tradition may be a parallel, non-overwritten mytheme about the same underlying substrate, or may be an independent cognitive-cultural response to the same regional hydrological reality (the Hīt bitumen seeps on the Euphrates are referenced in Gilgamesh XI as flood-caulking material, directly linking the flood corpus to a specific dragon-adjacent geology).
