Promoted from the broader yellow-river-plain cell because (a) Shandong carries the distinctive Dongyi eastern-coastal substrate (pre-Shang Longshan culture, ~4,500-4,000 BP), Confucian ritual center at Qufu, and Mount Tai (Taishan) — most senior of the Five Sacred Peaks; and (b) Shanxi carries Longmen and Yungang Buddhist grottoes with dragon-attended-Buddha iconography that transitioned Chinese Buddhist dragon-lexicon into medieval form.

Mount Tai (Taishan, 1,545m, Shandong) is Wuyue zhi shou (首 — head of the Five Sacred Peaks), site of fengshan imperial sacrifices by which a legitimate Son of Heaven signalled cosmic mandate. The Shiji "Fengshan shu" (~100 BCE) enumerates 72 legendary + historical performances. Documented historical fengshan include Qin Shi Huang (219 BCE), Han Wudi (110 BCE, six times), Han Guangwu (56 CE), Tang Gaozong (666 CE), Tang Xuanzong (725 CE), Song Zhenzong (1008 CE). The mountain's dragon-association is embedded in every layer: Yu the Great's flood-control, the local dragon-king temple, and the Taishan-specific laojun alchemical corpus. UNESCO World Heritage 1987 (mixed natural/cultural).

c0002 — Longshan culture (~4,500-4,000 BP) is pre-Shang East-Coast substrate

The Longshan culture (~2,600-2,000 BCE, Shandong and greater lower Yellow River) produced black-polished eggshell-thin pottery, earliest walled towns, and scapulimancy precursor to Shang oracle-bone practice. Dawenkou-Longshan continuity suggests a distinct Dongyi ethnolinguistic substrate east of the emerging Zhongyuan cultural center, later absorbed into Shang-Zhou political order. Jade-carved dragon-forms appear in late-Longshan and early-Shang contexts; the Hongshan jade-pig-dragon (asia-pr-yellow-river c0001) represents the northern counterpart of this Neolithic dragon-iconography substrate.

c0003 — Qufu Confucius-complex is continuous since 479 BCE

Qufu (Shandong) has hosted continuous memorial sacrifices to Confucius since his death 479 BCE, with the Kong-family lineage extending ~80 generations unbroken to the present (Kong Decheng line). The Confucius Temple, Cemetery, and Kong Family Mansion (UNESCO 1994) form the world's oldest continuous family burial ground. Confucian ritual codes codified dragon-iconography hierarchy (five-clawed imperial long vs. four-clawed mang vs. three-clawed lesser dragon) that structured East Asian dragon-iconography for ~2,000 years.

c0004 — Longmen / Yungang grottoes preserve 5th-8th-c. Buddhist dragon iconography

Yungang (Shanxi, 5th-c. CE, ~51,000 statues) and Longmen (Henan-Shanxi border, 5th-8th c. CE, ~100,000 statues) grottoes document the Northern Wei through Tang-period Buddhist iconographic canon including dragon-attended Buddha reliefs, naga-king converts to Buddhism, and the Chinese translation of Indic naga → Chinese long iconographic transition. The Shandong-Shanxi cell's written corpus spans Shang oracle-bones, Zhou bronzes, the Shi-Shu-Li-Yi-Chunqiu Confucian Five Classics (all with Shandong-region composition or transmission), Han Shiji and Hanshu, Buddhist Tang-era commentarial corpus, Neo-Confucian Song-Ming tradition, and Qing imperial compilations. This is among the densest continuous written-channel corpora globally, with the consequence that coverage-bias for this cell runs the opposite direction from most archive cells — the written channel substantially over-documents elite-scholarly perspective while the oral-popular dragon-tradition layer (village dragon-king temples, rain-sacrifice practice, folk ritual) is comparatively under-documented in canonical sources and must be recovered via Republican-era folklore collection (Zhou Zuoren, Zhong Jingwen) and post-1980 ethnographic fieldwork.
