West African Coastal Anchor

Cell afr-pr-west-coast covers the Guinea-Coast / Gulf-of-Guinea corridor from Senegambia east through Ghana, Togo, Benin (already partly anchored in afr-08), Nigeria, and Cameroon coastal zone. It is substrate-distinct from afr-08 (Dahomey/Gulf-of-Guinea volcanic line) and afr-05 (Sahel interior) — this cell privileges Yoruba, Igbo, Akan, and Mami-Wata coastal-maritime corpus complexes. The Ifá divination corpus is one of the world's most extensively documented indigenous African philosophical systems; the Atlantic-slave-trade export 1500–1888 produced the Afro-Atlantic diaspora transmission of the corpus to Cuba (Lucumí/Santería), Brazil (Candomblé), Haiti (Vodou), Trinidad (Orisha), and elsewhere.

The Yoruba orisha pantheon's water-deities — Oshun (Osun river), Yemoja (rivers, Ogun River then syncretically ocean in diaspora), Olokun (ocean, deep-water), Oya (Niger river / storms) — constitute a dragon-analogue cluster structurally parallel to Chinese long water-class iconography. Oshun carries mermaid/serpent-iconography with recurring emphasis on crowns, copper ornaments, and river-serpent imagery. Mami-Wata (pan-West-African, trans-colonial water-spirit) similarly carries serpent-coiled-around-arm iconography in contemporary iconographic tradition. The Osogbo Sacred Grove (UNESCO 2005) preserves the Oshun-site pod with continuous ceremonial activity.

The Ifá corpus (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage 2005) is organised into 16 principal odù and 240 derivative odù (total 256), each with hundreds of verse-narratives (ese Ifá), producing an estimated 100,000+ verses transmitted through babalawo / iyanifa practitioners. This is among the largest continuously-transmitted oral corpora globally. Serpent and large-reptile figures appear across multiple odù; the corpus includes creation-narratives in which the primeval water-substrate and its serpent-guardians precede terrestrial world-making. The Atlantic slave trade exported ~12.5 million Africans to the Americas (~2 million dying in the Middle Passage), with West-Central African Bight-of-Benin / Bight-of-Biafra ports — Ouidah, Lagos, Bonny, Old Calabar — contributing a disproportionate share of 18th-19th-c. Yoruba, Igbo, Fon, and Akan exports. The 1851-1852 Lagos bombardment and 1807 British slave-trade abolition restructured the trade rather than ending it; the 1888 Brazilian abolition marks formal closure. The cultural-consequence is that the West African coastal corpus became a transatlantic corpus, with Cuban Lucumí (Oyo-Yoruba substrate), Brazilian Candomblé (Fon-Yoruba substrate), Haitian Vodou (Fon substrate plus Kongo), and Trinidad Orisha as surviving transmission-branches. This produces a structurally unusual corpus-geometry: the highest-density scholarly documentation is often diasporic, with the West African source corpus under-documented relative to its diasporic descendants.

c0005 — Pentecostal-Charismatic conversion since 1970 has restructured contemporary coverage

West Africa has undergone one of the world's most rapid Pentecostal-Charismatic expansions since ~1970 (Nigeria now ~30%+ Pentecostal identifier among Christians; parallel Ghana expansion). The "deliverance" theology explicitly identifies orisha, odinani, and Mami-Wata traditions as demonic, producing a contemporary active-suppression dynamic paralleling earlier colonial-missionary phases but driven now by indigenous-led Pentecostal churches. The effect is not corpus-annihilation — Ifá and Orisha practice persist with substantial diaspora support — but produces generational non-transmission in Pentecostal-majority communities comparable in structural severity to the 16th-c. extirpación campaigns though with different mechanism and ideological-framing.
